Masters of the Universe has found its “I have the power” He-Man in Nicholas Galitzine.

The Travis Knight-directed movie has Galitzine play the lead from a screenplay by Chris Butler. THR reports that Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner and Escape Artists Jason Blumenthal, Todd Black, and Steve Tisch will produce an exciting new film.

Galitzine was recently in the Showtime series Mary & George. In The Idea of You, he played Hayes Campbell. The movie was a romantic comedy directed by Michael Showalter and starred Anne Hathaway as a divorced mother who falls for a young rock star during a trip to Coachella.

About He-Man and The Masters of the Universe

You may remember He-Man from the ’80s. He’s an iconic character who defends Castle Greyskull. The film is focused on Prince Adam of Eternia. When he wields his Power Sword, he becomes He-Man, which gives him superhuman strength. He’s constantly battling threats from Skelator and evil wizards.

The He-Man brand became famous when Mattel introduced the action figures in 1982 and launched an extremely popular animated series titled He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in 1983. The show gained nine million viewers in its first year in the U.S. and eventually was broadcast to at least 37 countries.

The success brought a feature-length animated movie, The Secret of the Sword, in 1985. It followed the trend of toys becoming movies during the decade. Also, there was a He-Man & She-Ra: A Christmas Special (1985) and The New Adventures of He-Man (1990).

Additionally, He-Man landed in illustrated books released with the first series of toys. In 2012, DC Comics started to publish a six-issue limited series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, along with the weekly digital series, Masters of the Universe.

Designer Mark Taylor initially created the character. Then, Mattel developed it into the powerhouse it became.

What can we expect from the new Masters of the Universe?

This could become quite big if the new movie can capture the spirit and passion for the He-Man brand as it did in the ’80s.

Like in the 1980s, movies based on toys and games are once again an “in” and immensely popular. Just look at Barbie, Trolls, The Lego Movies, Transformers, and American Girl. Also, video game adaptations are huge with the success of The Super Mario Bros and series such as The Last of Us.

Nicholas Galitzine is an interesting choice because you don’t see him as a bulky, muscular character. But Mattel knows what they’re doing (special effects do wonders), and his acting chops are spot on. Plus, as Adam, he seems ideal.

Travis Knight is known for his animation background, for incorporating toys in movies like Coraline, and for directing live-action films like Bumblebee, which is from the Transformers franchise.

Get ready for He-Man when Masters of the Universe gets a theatrical release on June 5, 2026. It could be the reboot this franchise needs.
