The Dallas Mavericks have one championship to their name. That moment came in 2011, when Dirk Nowitzki led this organization to a title over the Miami Heat. A chance for a second title is now on the line for the Mavericks. Only this time, Luka Doncic is leading the way for the Mavs in the 2024 NBA Finals.

On the eve of the NBA Finals, media day chaos has ensued for both the Mavericks and Celtics. Aside from the general questions pertaining to how it feels to be in the championship series and all of that, there are many great questions that get asked. Dallas head coach Jason Kidd was the recipient of one of the more interesting storylines to arise before the 2024 NBA Finals, as he was taken on a trip down memory lane with ESPN's Malika Andrews.

Kidd, who was a member of the Mavericks' 2011 championship team, not only answered the hard question about him coming off the bench if he was on the same team with Luka and Kyrie Irving, but he also gave a bold take on the debate between Doncic and Nowitzki for the greatest Maverick of all time.

When asked if Doncic leading the Mavs to a championship this year over the Celtics cements him as the greatest in franchise history, Kidd kept his answer brief and short: “Yes.”

Doncic, who already has a decorated list of achievements and accolades both in the NBA and EuroLeague, has staked his claim as one of the best players in the league at 25 years old.

Not only has Luka found himself in the MVP conversation each of the last five seasons, but he has made the All-NBA First Team five straight years. Doncic led the league in scoring this season at 33.9 points per game.

As far as becoming the greatest Maverick of all time, Doncic appears to be well on his way. In addition to setting numerous franchise records this season, a championship would surely put Luka's name right next to Dirk's, if not in front of the legends. This may not be a discussion about Doncic becoming the greatest Maverick of all time, but the greatest international player in NBA history should he win a title this year.

Although this may seem like a bold take from Kidd, this debate over the greatest in franchise history is very real. The Mavericks have their work cut out for them entering the NBA Finals. Boston was the best team in the league this season, and they have coasted their way to the championship series. If Luka can overcome the Celtics and win a championship in his sixth NBA season, he will be the greatest player in the history of the Mavericks.
