Dirk Nowitzki may be one of the most identifiable sports figure in Dallas history, but the former Dallas Mavericks forward has company processing through customs.

The 41-year-old Mavs legend tweeted on Tuesday evening that he was surprised to see many cameras waiting at the airport as he arrives, only to realize that it was not for him but for Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Elliott is a two-time Pro-Bowl back for the Cowboys, who held out of the team's training camp and preseason in an effort to negotiate a long-term contract with the NFL franchise.

After a long time away from the team, Elliott has reportedly agreed “in principle” to a new deal. Elliott is rumored to be inking a six-year deal worth $90 million, an exorbitant amount for the two-time rushing yards leader in an era when players of the same position are routinely cast aside by organizations due to diminishing returns and comparable value for cheaper labor.

While the one-time champion and Mavs icon is very well known in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, right now north Texas sports fans have their eyes and ears on the NFL and Zeke. Dirk, the NBA's sixth-leading all-time career scorer, will have to relinquish control of Dallas' attention for a while as he ventures into his post-playing retirement period.

Nowitzki spent his entire 21-year tenure in the NBA with the Mavs, capping it off in 2018-19 with an honoree selection in the All-Star game along with Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade.
