Dorian Finney-Smith has agreed to a three-year, $12 million deal to return to the Dallas Mavericks, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

The versatile forward is one of the key pieces the organization intended to keep, having now retained others like Maxi Kleber, J.J. Barea and Dwight Powell while also bringing back Seth Curry, who spent a year with the Portland Trail Blazers after an injury-laden season that cost him the 2017-18 campaign.

The Mavs are determined to run with their coached talent, surrounding emerging superstar Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis with an air of familiarity as they develop into the contender they hope to be.

Dallas will use Finney-Smith’s Bird rights, so this doesn’t impact the $23 million cap room they still have available, according to cap guru Albert Nahmad. The Mavs could even see a $310,000 increase in cap room by nixing their original qualifying offer for his services.

Finney-Smith's ability to slash, rebound and shoot the 3 combined with his all-around motor make him a strong and valuable piece for the Mavs to retain at a bargain rate:

This deal is comparable to what the Golden State Warriors had to pay Kevon Looney (three years, $15 million), as Finney-Smith could have gotten a few suitors down the line, but opted to stay with the team that gave him a chance to stake his place in the league.

The Florida product played a career-high 24.5 minutes per game last season, averaging 7.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in his 2018-19 campaign.
