Tthe Mavs confirmed Wednesday that Dwight Powell suffered a ruptured Achilles in the first quarter of their loss to the Clippers on Tuesday night.
Now, the Stanford product is weighing his options with regards to surgical procedures:
Powell's injury occurred late in the first quarter of Tuesday's game. As he drove to the hoop, his right leg gave out. He collapsed in pain and was later helped off the court.
“It's a somber night with Dwight's situation,” Mavs coach Rick Carlisle told ESPN after Tuesday's game.
News of Powell's status is a tough break for the Mavs, who are currently holding a 27-16 overall record. Unfortunately, most experts feel that his season is likely over, as he'll need a fair amount of time to recover and the 2019-20 campaign is already halfway over.
In his 40 appearances with the Mavs this season, Powell racked up averages of 9.4 points on 63.8 percent shooting from the field (25.6 percent from beyond the arc), 5.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and just under one steal (0.9) in 26.5 minutes per outing.
With Dwight Powell out of commission, players like Boban Marjanovic and Maxi Kleber will likely see upticks in their usage rates for the Mavs.
The Mavs will be back in action on Thursday night, when they'll face off against the Portland Trail Blazers. Tip-off inside the Moda Center is set for 10:30 p.m. ET, with TNT having live broadcast coverage.
