The Dallas Mavericks made one of the most shocking moves during the 2022 NBA Trade Deadline. The team traded away Latvian forward Kristaps Porzingis to the Washington Wizards for Davis Bertans and Spencer Dinwiddie. It's a move that left many fans confused, to say the least.

Speaking to reporters after that trade, Mavs head coach Jason Kidd shared his thoughts on the team's current roster construction with Luka Doncic. According to him, Dallas may not need a second fiddle to complement their star, instead mirroring the 2011 team he won a championship with. (via Callie Caplan)

“It could be a team where there is no real second star, you’ve just got guys who play roles at a very high level.”

The 2011 Mavs were unique in the sense that they had no true second-in-command to superstar forward Dirk Nowitzki. Instead, it was a group that thrived on contributions from every role player, including Kidd. That combined effort along with Dirk's best playoff run gave the team the edge over the Big 3 Miami Heat.

Historically speaking, though, teams with just one star have struggled to make it deep in the playoffs. Kidd and Nowitzki's Mavs were an outlier, especially when you look at the next teams to win it all. That's exactly the reason why Mark Cuban traded for Porzingis in the first place: to be a co-star to Doncic.

Mavs fans are hoping that the Luka-Doncic led team captures the magic of the championship team and make it deep. At the very least, they can bank on their Slovenian superstar create sweet magic on the court, like his 50-point explosion on Thursday.
