In a bit of good news for Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks, team legend and fan-favorite JJ Barea is returning to the place where he truly belongs.

According to Selby Lopez of Dallas Morning News, Barea will be re-joining the Mavs ahead of the 2021-22 campaign. However, he won't be part of the roster and instead will be involved in a coaching capacity.

Barea also confirmed the news, saying that he is hyped to be part of the team again in a new role. His position is still undetermined, but he acted as an unofficial assistant coach for Dallas on Saturday.

“I’m going to be involved, and I’m definitely excited,” Barea said. “Dallas is my second home, man. It’s just special, man. It’s the happiest place that I’ve ever played basketball.”

JJ Barea's involvement with Dallas isn't surprising, though, since he has already been rumored to be exploring a possible coaching role with the Mavs back in June.

The Puerto Rican was also part of the Mavs' 2011 championship squad, joining his fellow returning teammates Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki in Dallas once again. Mark Cuban and Co. hired Kidd as their next head after Rick Carlisle stepped down, while the team asked Nowitzki to be a special advisor.

For what it's worth, Barea shares a great relationship with Luka Doncic. They even poke fun at each other on social media a lot, with the Slovenian once calling the veteran guard his “little brother” as a jab to Barea's height.

With that said, the 22-year-old will certainly be happy to see a familiar face back on the Mavs' bench.
