After an incredible 2021-22 season that saw them make a run to the Western Conference Finals, Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks now head to the offseason with several concerns to address. First and foremost, however, is they need to decide on the future of Jalen Brunson.

Brunson is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and he is expected to have many suitors and command a significant pay raise from his rookie contract that paid him$6.14 million in four years.

The Mavs are largely predicted to re-sign Brunson, with GM Nico Harrison saying that it is even their no. 1 priority. Fortunately, they can offer him the most money.

For Doncic, Brunson deserves a huge contract not only because of his breakout run in the 2022 playoffs, but also for his constant improvement through the years since they came to the Mavs as part of the 2018 NBA Draft.

“All the conversation around him, he stayed focused. He wanted to win. The step—the huge leap—he took this year was unbelievable, and he’s going to deserve all the money he gets,” Doncic said of the Mavs guard, per Callie Caplan of the Dallas Morning News.

Jalen Brunson has undoubtedly proven to be a capable second option behind Luka Doncic, and while he needs to be more consistent offensively, there is no doubt he has the skills to be a star in the NBA.

With that said, it's not surprising why the Mavs want him back. Every other team needing a point guard will want him, and it's not everyday Dallas gets to develop a quality player who can be a cornerstone of the franchise for the years to come.
