The Dallas Mavericks struck big for a center in Christian Wood, netting Luka Doncic as frontcourt running mate via trade that could do some serious damage come postseason time.

But the move also comes at the expense of beloved giant Boban Marjanovic, who was a part of the trade package that brought Wood over to Dallas.

Given that the Houston Rockets aren't exactly hankering to contend anytime soon, there's really no use for them to keep Boban Marjanovic if not to just have him endear himself to yet another fanbase. Boban is 33 years old and is impactful in spurts during the regular season, but his true value as a locker room presence may be valued most by the Mavs than anywhere else at this point.

But if the Rockets choose to waive him, he would be ineligible to sign with Dallas outright given NBA rules. But there is one workaround, according to NBA insider Marc Stein:

Rules reminders: If Houston trades Boban elsewhere and the new team waived him, he would be eligible to re-sign with Dallas. If Boban and Houston part ways, he cannot re-sign with Dallas for a full calendar year after the trade is official.

The Dallas Mavericks are gunning to contend for an NBA title next year. But the celebration with the Larry O'Brien trophy will likely be sweeter for Mavs fans with Boban Marjanovic there to hoist it up as well.
