The Dallas Mavericks' reported interest in Orlando Magic big man Nikola Vucevic is overstated, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

Nikola Vucevic becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season ends, and there have been rumors linking him with the Mavs. However, according to Stein, Dallas wants to improve its athleticism, foot speed, and perimeter shooting in the summer.

And what I have heard is that the Mavericks’ interest in Vucevic has been overstated. I don’t get the sense that they plan to go after him. Improving the team’s overall athleticism and foot speed, in addition to the very pressing need for more shooting, have been two of Dallas’ recent priorities.

Vucevic made his first All-Star team this season. He's averaging 20.5 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game for the Magic while shooting 52.1 percent from the field, 38.0 percent from beyond the arc and 77.9 percent from the free-throw line.

The Mavs acquired star power forward Kristaps Porzingis from the New York Knicks. The team does need a starting-caliber center since they shipped DeAndre Jordan to the Knicks. But in the small-ball era, Dallas can just play Dwight Powell at the center spot and use their money to sign shooters in free agency.
