What was supposed to be New York Mets ace Max Scherzer's heartfelt homecoming to Washington turned into a rather ugly situation quickly. Tensions suddenly flared up when shortstop Francisco Lindor was hit by a wild pitch by relief pitcher Steve Cishek. That incident turned into a bench-clearing situation where Mets players were visibly frustrated.

After the game, Mets manager Buck Showalter talked about the errant pitches from the Nationals. According to Showalter, those things simply just can't happen in a game. Showalter also provided an update on Lindor, saying that the shortstop was fine and was “lucky”. (via Anthony DiComo)

Getting nailed by an MLB-caliber fastball is painful enough on it's own. However, Lindor had it much worse, as he was drilled by a crisp fastball to the side of his jaw, knocking the Mets SS down to the ground. Cishek was ejected from the game as Showalter and the rest of the team were visibly angry at the Nationals reliever.

Thankfully, Lindor is fine, and the Mets shortstop was able to clear the concussion protocol. Still, it's still a scary sight to see someone get hit by a pitch, especially if it's to the head. That kind of pitch could potentially be career-ending, especially if the player got hit in the wrong place.

The Mets were able to channel their frustration into a win, demolishing the Nationals 7 – 3 off of a 2 HR – 3 RBI game from Starling Marte and an excellent performance from the bullpen. With two more games left in their series, it will be interesting to see how Lindor and the team react to their opponents.
