In September of 2020, legendary New York Mets pitcher and Hall of Famer Tom Seaver passed away at the age of 75. Now, less than two years later, the team honors him with a statue at Citi Field, perfectly capturing his meaning to the franchise. The Mets unveiled the statue Friday ahead of their 2022 Home Opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Ahead of the statue ceremony, the team presented Tom Seaver's wife Nancy with flowers. Nancy was ecstatic to see her husband's statue outside of the New York stadium. Looking at it, she said, “It's so nice to have you here where you belong.”

MLB insider Jon Heyman tweeted the touching moment.

The statue also meant a lot to legendary Mets catcher Mike Piazza. He tweeted his emotional reaction to the ceremony before it even began.

Though they played for the team in different decades, Seaver and Piazza bonded over their legendary status in New York. They participated in multiple ceremonial events, including the 2008 closing ceremony of Shea Stadium and the first pitch in Citi Field in 2009.

Seaver was a 12-time All-Star and World Series champion. Before the statue, the Mets honored him by retiring his No. 41 and inducting him into the Mets Hall of Fame. Seaver will forever be a part of Mets history, and now has a physical presence in the ballpark.
