New York Mets' owner Steven Cohen is not happy. He and the rest of the Mets organization were under the impression that they would be able to make a final offer to starting pitcher Steven Matz before he signed an official deal. Yet this didn't fall through, and Matz eventually went on to sign a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals without giving New York a chance. Here's what Cohen had to say on the situation:
I’m not happy this morning. I’ve never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by a player’s agent. I guess words and promises don’t matter.
The Mets were willing to offer Matz a four year, 44 million dollar contract, which would have been similar to the signed deal with St. Louis. Instead, the members of the starting pitchers' camp stated that he had a sudden change of heart and wanted to sign with the Cardinals. The other finalists for the 30 year old included the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and his prior team, the Toronto Blue Jays.
New York continues to lose quality starters in free agency. Besides Steven Matz, the Mets had to see Noah Syndgeraard leave to join the Los Angeles Angels. Looking to build a formidable pitching staff around ace Jacob DeGrom, the New York Mets will need to execute free agency deals with a better process going forward.
