It's a sight that Miami Hurricanes football fans have become accustomed to, the turnover chain. Since the 2017 season, after every takeaway, the Hurricanes player responsible for the play donned a massive, 10-karat gold ‘turnover chain.' Well, college football fans won't be seeing it anymore. New Miami football head coach Mario Cristobal has shockingly decided to retire the turnover chain. Here's why, per Brett McMurphy of Action Network and Sports Illustrated.

“It’s not part of our culture,” Cristobal told McMurphy.

Point blank. Mario Cristobal said that the turnover chain is “not part of our culture.” There were rumors surfacing in January from Hurricanes offensive coordinator Alex Mirabal that the move would be made. Now, it's official.

The turnover chain was introduced by Manny Diaz, the defensive coordinator of Miami football back in 2017. Jeweler AJ Machado, aka the King of Bling, created the gaudy chain.

However, the effectiveness of the turnover chain is certainly in question, especially given the recent numbers put up by the Hurricanes defense.

Per ESPN Stats and Info, Miami football's takeaway numbers have been in a steady decline since the installment of the turnover chain.

That certainly has a lot to do with the talent being brought in. Cristobal is changing that too, as the Hurricanes have surged into the top-10 rankings of 247 Sports for the 2023 class.

Ultimately, getting rid of the chain is about “culture.” Cristobal wants to completely overhaul things around the Hurricanes.

Taking away something synonymous with the program for the past five years is a good way to do that.
