The Jim Harbaugh era at Michigan seemed to be coming to a screeching halt after the 2020 season, but the Wolverines have apparently had a change of heart. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Harbaugh and Michigan have officially reached an agreement on a contract extension.

It was a season filled with disappointment for the Wolverines as they finished with a dismal 2-4 record, giving Harbaugh his sixth consecutive season at Michigan with three or more losses. Due to the lack of success he's had—especially in the Big Ten—there were reports in December that Harbaugh was likely on his way out of Michigan and was itching to return to the NFL.

However, Michigan seems to believe that Harbaugh deserves more time to turn around the program. While the specifics of his contract have yet to be shared, the decision to sign him to an extension will definitely be argued among fans and the media alike. (UPDATE: Schefter reports it's a four-year extension through the 2025 football season.)

Altogether, in his six seasons as the head coach of the Wolverines, Harbaugh has compiled a 49-22 record. At the same time, he has a 34-16 record in the Big Ten, including an 0-5 record against Ohio State.

The initial reports of Harbaugh nearing an extension with the Big Ten school popped up last weekend. And despite him not being able to live up to expectations thus far, Michigan is giving him more time to implement his culture in hopes to turn Michigan back into a powerhouse program.

With Harbaugh returning to Ann Arbor, it remains to be seen if he ever decides to make a return to the NFL.
