Michael Conforto is still a free agent. That much we know. What we did not know was the reason as to why that was. After all, Conforto is a quality outfielder who offers pop from the left side of the plate. Most teams would be drooling over signing a player with that pedigree. However, it was revealed on Wednesday that Conforto injured his throwing shoulder during an offseason workout. The minor ailment reportedly put a stall on contract negotiations for the outfielder, per Ken Rosenthal.

Free-agent outfielder Michael Conforto landed “irregularly” on his right (throwing) shoulder diving for a ball during a workout in January, and wanted to get back to 100 percent before resuming contract negotiations with clubs, according to his agent, Scott Boras.

Boras said that Conforo since has regained his arm strength, and that contract discussions with clubs re-started about a week ago. “Everyone has been wondering if it’s economic,” Boras said. “No, it’s just him getting back to normal (physically).”

This helps explain why the 29-year old is still on the open market. Yes, he struggled in 2021 after hitting just .232 with just 14 home runs over 125 games. But in 2020 he hit over .320 with 12 home runs during the 60 game campaign. There is no question that he would have drawn earlier interest had he been fully healthy after the lockout.

Nonetheless, Michael Conforto's agent Scott Boras mentioned that contract negotiations have re-begun. There is a chance that he signs somewhere prior to Opening Day. The Mets, White Sox, and Giants have all been listed as potential landing destinations for Conforto.
