Why The American League Could Cover The Spread

The American League All-Star team will look to build on their current seven-game winning streak. Their lineup is loaded with young talent and should have no problem putting runs on the board. The first two up will be Shohei Ohtani and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. These two rising stars are the betting favorites to win the American League MVP Award this season. Ohtani is the league-leader in home runs and Guerrero is hitting a whopping .332 with 28 long balls.

The Boston Red Sox are well represented with Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers in the starting lineup and JD Martinez sure to hit in the later innings. With four Blue Jays and a solid mix of power and contact rounding out the roster, the American League certainly has the advantage at the plate. The AL has scored at least four runs in four of the last five All-Star Games.

The American League will need some strong innings from their pitching staff as it's clear that they are the weaker club in this respect. Shohei Ohtani (4-1, 3.49 ERA) will get the start and rightfully so. The two-way superstar has allowed two earned runs or less in five of his last six starts. Some notable names that will appear in relief are Kyle Gibson, Lance Lynn, Matt Barnes, and Aroldis Chapman.

Why The National League Could Cover The Spread

The National League All-Star team will be eager to snap the losing streak and put on a good showing at Coors Field. Their lineup has some exciting young stars, but it's the pitching staff that's sure to shine in this game. Fernando Tatis Jr. will lead off for the NL and he is looked at by many as the new face of baseball. Tatis is in the midst of a breakout season with 28 home runs and 20 stolen bases for the Padres.

Reigning NL MVP Freddie Freeman will hit clean up and a few other notable stars include Nick Castellanos and Jesse Winker from the Reds and Max Muncy from the Dodgers. The Los Angeles Dodgers have the most All-Star selections in the National League with five. Many of the NL's best hitters are either injured or choosing not to play however, which has certainly hurt their chances of winning this game.

We will get to see Mad Max Scherzer open the game on the mound. The future hall-of-famer has been phenomenal this season with a 2.66 ERA and 134 strikeouts. This will be Scherzer's fourth All-Star start, which is a feat that only five other pitcher's have accomplished in the history of baseball. He will be relieved by a plethora of dominant arms including Corbin Burnes, Walker Buehler, Tijuan Walker, and Josh Hader, to name a few.

Final MLB All-Star Game Prediction & Pick

I am going to pick the American League to continue their winning streak for one main reason. Four of the top National League arms including MVP-favorite Jacob deGrom will not be participating in the game. The NL still has a slight advantage in terms of pitching, but not enough to outweigh the AL's huge offensive edge. The American League's reserves would make up a better lineup than the National League's starters and I see offenses reigning supreme at Coors Field. 21 runs were scored in the 1998 All-Star Game at Coors Field and if the 91st All-Star Game looks anything like that one, it will definitely be advantage AL.
