The Miami Marlins take on the St. Louis Cardinals. Check out our MLB odds series for our Marlins Cardinals prediction and pick.

Braxton Garrett takes the bump for the Marlins, while Dakota Hudson is the starter for the Cardinals.

Braxton Garrett has a 4.08 ERA. He has made only four starts, pitching 17 2/3 innings. Is there any real big takeaway from those four starts? Not really. He generally pitches into the fifth inning. He averages one walk per start, close to two walks per nine innings. He has allowed only two home runs. It's just not a lot to go on if you're trying to assess how well he is likely to pitch in this game.

Dakota Hudson has a 3.72 ERA. In his last six starts, he has presented a very complicated picture. In four of those starts, he has pitched 23 2/3 innings and allowed just four runs. In the other two starts from that group of six appearances, he has pitched 11 1/3 innings and allowed 11 runs. Which version of Hudson are we going to see in this game? It's a fascinating question.

Why The Marlins Could Cover the Spread

The Marlins should feel they can hit Dakota Hudson. They should also feel that they can get hits with men on base. They had a terrible time of doing that on Monday. They got bunches of hits against the Cardinals and did not score a run off them in the first several innings, en route to a blowout loss. Miami's hitters weren't dominated; they simply didn't come through when it counted. There is a good chance of some leveling out occuring here, and the laws of averages are going to come to Miami's aid.

Why The Cardinals Could Cover the Spread

After blowing out the Marlins on Monday, the Cardinals should feel great about coming to the park on Tuesday. They got rid of the bad taste of a series loss at home to the Cubs over the weekend. This team responded exactly the way one would hope they would, and it showed why it is a contender in the National League. Getting a lot of different hitters involved in the attack against the Marlins on Monday in the first game of this series sets up the Cards well for the second game. They should love the pitching matchup against young and unproven Braxton Garrett. They should feel they can feast on yet another Marlins pitcher, and the guy they roughed up on Monday, Pablo Lopez, is better than Garrett. St. Louis should feel very comfortable here on Tuesday evening in Busch Stadium.

Final Marlins-Cardinals Prediction & Pick

It's a clear-cut calculus: St. Louis has a better pitcher on the mound and a better set of hitters and a better team, playing at home and gaining some momentum after some recent struggles. Put it all together and don't overthink the matter.

Final Marlins-Cardinals Prediction & Pick: Cardinals -1.5
