The San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies will play game two of their three-game series on Tuesday night. It's time to continue our MLB odds series and make a Padres-Rockies prediction and pick.

The Padres came into this season with sky-high expectations. Everyone looked at San Diego as a contender in the NL West and in the World Series. Now, the Padres are stuck 11 games back of first place in the division. They trail both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants by a wide margin, and time to make up that ground is running out.

San Diego needs to start beating teams like the Rockies with consistency if they want any chance of catching up to their rivals. The Rockies would love to do their part in knocking the Padres out of playoff contention with a second straight win here, so this should be an entertaining matchup.

Here's how the bookmakers have set the lines for Tuesday's game.

Why The Padres Could Cover The Spread

The Padres' pitching has deteriorated as of late, so they've been relying on the bats to win them games. It hasn't worked out terribly for San Diego because of just how good their offense has been. The Padres rank inside the top ten in baseball in batting average, OBP, walks drawn, and RBIs.

Star shortstop turned outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. returned from an extended stint on the IL on Sunday, giving this San Diego lineup another deadly bat. Rockies pitcher German Marquez won't have an easy outing against this Padres squad.

Marquez has been surprisingly good this season, but San Diego has a couple of statistical edges over him in this matchup. The Rockies ace seems to be on a bit of a cold streak, as both of his starts in August ended in disaster. Marquez has pitched ten innings in August and has given up seven runs in that span.

To make things even better for San Diego, the Padres are a much better offensive team when they get to face a right-handed pitcher, earning a higher batting average, OBP, and OPS against righties as opposed to lefties.

Why The Rockies Could Cover The Spread

Despite back-to-back poor outings from Marquez, the righty should recover well against the Padres. He's already faced San Diego twice this season, pitching a total of 13 innings against his division rival. Marquez only gave up two runs in those 13 innings, so he clearly feels comfortable pitching to these hitters.

Marquez is also clearly more comfortable when pitching at home. All of his numbers improve, with his opponent's batting average dropping from .255 when Marquez is on the road to .199 when the righty plays in Coors Field. Another great outing against the Padres isn't out of the question in this game.

Luckily for the Rockies, the Padres aren't deploying a pitcher of Marquez's caliber. San Diego will entrust the start to pitcher Matt Strahm. This is Strahm's first appearance as a starter, so it's fair to expect a short outing from him. A short outing from Strahm may actually be better for the Padres, as none of his relief appearances have been any sort of good.

The San Diego bullpen will have to pitch the vast majority of this game, which is always a tall task for a relief corps. The Rockies should be able to tag Strahm early and add on a couple of runs throughout the contest as the San Diego bullpen wears down.

Final Padres-Rockies Prediction & Pick

It's baffling that the bookmakers have set this game as a coin flip. The Rockies definitely be favored here, as they have a huge pitching advantage in this matchup. If Marquez puts together a half-decent outing, the Rockies should lock up a series win, and Marquez has proven he's more than capable of pitching to the Padres.

FINAL PICK: Colorado Rockies ML (-105)
