The Colorado Rockies take on the San Diego Padres. Check out our MLB odds series for our Rockies Padres prediction and pick.

German Marquez starts for the Rockies, while Blake Snell gets the ball for the Padres.

German Marquez just pitched his best game since May 14. His win over the Giants on June 7 was a six-inning, three-run game in which he allowed three runs in the first inning and was able to shut out San Francisco in his next five innings. He wasn’t dominant, but he contained damage, something he hasn’t regularly been able to do this season. He has a 6.49 ERA, and he has allowed fewer than four runs in just two of his last 10 starts, June 7 being one of them. It is still hard to trust Marquez, but maybe his most recent outing against the Giants — who had previously worn out the Rockies before this past week’s series loss to Colorado — marks a turning point.

Blake Snell has a 5.68 ERA, but the larger truth about the former Tampa Bay Ray is that he has barely pitched this season. He recorded his first out of 2022 on May 18. He has pitched 19 innings, which is not much to go on. In those 19 innings, Snell has given up 13 runs. The big problem with Snell’s performance in limited action this year is that he lacks command and control. He has issued 11 walks in 19 innings, which is not reflective of his peak with the Rays. It remains to be seen if the old Blake Snell, the dominant Blake Snell, emerges, but one should not expect that to happen in this start or in the next few weeks. This appears to be a long-term process.

Why The Rockies Could Cover the Spread

Blake Snell isn’t “Blake Snell” just yet. He could soon return to the level of form displayed by the ace of the Tampa Bay Rays when they made the 2020 World Series and nearly toppled the Los Angeles Dodgers, but that version hasn’t emerged yet in 2022. Until he does, it’s reasonable to express skepticism and therefore go with the Rockies, who hammered MacKenzie Gore of the Padres on Saturday night in Game 2 of a split doubleheader. Colorado was able to bounce back from a tough Game 1 loss and show that after winning a series in San Francisco against the Giants, it can split this four-game series versus the Padres.

Why The Padres Could Cover the Spread

After getting pounded Saturday night by the Rockies, the Padres will want to bounce back and play up to their capabilities. They did not play very well in Saturday’s doubleheader. Even the game they won — the first game Saturday afternoon — was not a masterpiece. The Padres struggled to hit in both games. They didn’t get good pitching in the second game, and their defense was bad in the nightcap as well. Against German Marquez, a struggling starting pitcher, the Padres should be able to hit the reset button.

Final Rockies-Padres Prediction & Pick

The Padres might seem to be the pick here, and that’s reasonable, but with the total at only 7.5 runs and both pitchers having struggled for most of the year, the over is sitting there as a great play in this game.
