The Minnesota Twins take on the Seattle Mariners. Check out our MLB odds series for our Twins Mariners prediction and pick.

Joe Ryan will go to the mound for the Twins, while Logan Gilbert takes the hill for the Mariners.

Dylan Bundy, who has a 5.87 ERA, was originally scheduled to pitch for Minnesota in this game, but on Tuesday morning it was reported that Joe Ryan was coming off the COVID-19 list to pitch this game. Bundy would have put the Twins at a considerable disadvantage, but Ryan has been one of their best starters and is definitely an odds-changer as you consider your betting pick here. Ryan’s most recent start against the Mariners came on Opening Day this season, over two months ago. He gave up a two-run homer to the Mitch Haniger, whom the Mariners desperately miss in their lineup; he has been out for several weeks with an injury. Those were the only runs Ryan allowed that day. He went four innings and gave up two hits, walked four and struck out four. He hasn't pitched since May 21, though, so don't assume too much about his expected level of form. His 2.28 ERA is also impossible to ignore.

Logan Gilbert has a 2.41 ERA and has done a fine job for Seattle this year. Gilbert has pitched 71 innings. He is a workhorse. He has pitched at least six full innings in each of his last five starts. When you realize how many innings he pitches, the fact that he has not allowed more than four runs in any start this season becomes more impressive. It's not as though Gilbert pitches an average of four innings per start. He averages just under six innings each time he gets the ball. In his last three starts, Gilbert has pitched 19 innings and allowed only four earned runs. He has defeated the Houston Astros twice in that span, showing that he can go up against the best and thrive.

Why The Twins Could Cover the Spread

Joe Ryan, if he is on top of his game, clearly gives the Twins an edge in the pitching matchup. Logan Gilbert is very good, but Ryan has been even better. The Mariners were playing well a week ago, but they have stopped hitting in recent days, and the Twins were able to contain them on Monday night, allowing just two runs. Minnesota has played well against good American League competition, winning a series against the Rays over the past weekend. This team looks like the favorite in the American League Central, and the Mariners look like a huge disappointment.

Why The Mariners Could Cover the Spread

After missing more than three weeks due to being on the COVID-19 list, Joe Ryan might not be especially sharp in this game. Logan Gilbert is in a good rhythm and has an excellent chance of being able to outpitch Ryan in this game. The Mariners have to feel very confident about the pitching matchup, given Ryan's layoff and the uncertainties that reality involves.

Final Twins-Mariners Prediction & Pick

The Joe Ryan situation is a big question mark. No one knows how he will pitch after a long layoff. This is a classic stay-away game, but if you insist on making a pick, the Twins are probably the better choice if only because the Mariners are struggling at the plate.

Final Twins-Mariners Prediction & Pick: Twins -1.5
