Baltimore Orioles ace pitcher John Means left Wednesday night's game versus the Milwaukee Brewers with forearm tightness as the Orioles lost 4-2 against the Brewers at Camden Yards.
Means was cruising along to another solid start, giving up two runs on two hits over four innings, when the 28-year-old was forced to leave the game.
Means, who was the subject of trade rumors last winter, is coming off a very impressive season last year when the Kansas native finished with a 3.62 earned-run average, a 1.030 WHIP, and 134 strikeouts in 146 innings for Baltimore. He was a rare bright spot on a not-so-good Orioles roster amid a never-ending rebuild. Baltimore outfielder Cedric Mullins also had a breakout year. Beyond that, it was hard to something Orioles fans could get excited about.
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters after the game that Means' issue was more “precautionary” in nature than anything. It is important to note that this is the second consecutive start that Means claims that he has dealt with an issue with his forearm.
Hyde said that Means started to feel tightness during the third inning of the game. The southpaw alerted the Orioles training staff in the fourth inning of the ongoing issue that he was facing.
Regardless of whether the issue is precautionary or not, Means is expected to have an MRI on his arm.
For the Orioles to have any modicum of success this season, Means is one starter that the Orioles need to pitch every fifth game at the top of their rotation.
