If there are still doubts about Jon Lester's love for Chicago Cubs fans, well, this should settle things once and for all.
The Cubs pitcher bought 4,838 beers to hand out to fans in the Windy City from Friday to Sunday. His bill cost around $31,000. But his generosity didn't stop there. He also dropped a 34% tip, a nod to his jersey number, which came out to an additional amount of more than $16,000. So if our math is correct, he spent $47,000 for beers!
Now, that's what great pitching is all about.
Lester posted the receipts on his Twitter account to prove that he really shelled out a huge amount for his, um, beer benefactors.
Thanks for coming out this weekend y’all! Yesterday we added 1,372 @MillerLites to my tab, bringing our grand total to 4,838. Shout out to all the bars, their staff, and those cheers-ing from afar! Whether this is goodbye or see you next year, I love you Chicago! #JonsTab pic.twitter.com/OTEIO2gOjc

The three-time World Series champion said he did it as a sign of gratitude to all the Cubs fans who have supported him for the past six years. The 36-year-old is expected to get a $10 million buyout and hit free agency in the offseason. So if ever he has no other choice but to leave, Lester wanted to make sure to give a nod to all his supporters. His surprise beer giveaway also helped several local bars in the area as he bought the boozer from them.
Jon Lester said on his caption: “Shout out to all the bars, their staff, and those cheers-ing from afar! Whether this is goodbye or see you next year, I love you Chicago! #JonsTab”
Lester, a five-time MLB All-Star, joined the Cubs in 2015 after spending his first nine years with the Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics. He pitched a no-hitter on May 19, 2008, and was named MVP of the National League Championship Series in 2016. Two years later, he became National League wins leader.
