The Cincinnati Reds knew they were going to be playing a game of patience when they selected Hunter Greene with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft. The high school phenom has been working his way through the minor leagues ever since getting selected by the Reds, and five years later he's set to reach the big leagues. The Reds announced Wednesday that Greene would be making his MLB debut for the team on April 10, set to toe the rubber against the Atlanta Braves.

This is obviously exciting news for Reds fans, who will finally get the chance to see their top prospect in his first taste of Major League action.

Greene's minor league career got off to a rocky start. After transitioning from shortstop to pitcher, Greene logged a woeful 12.46 ERA in 3 starts at Rookie ball. He missed all of the 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He spent the 2020 season pitching at Cincinnati's alternative site before returning to minor-league game action in 2021.

Across two minor league levels in 2021 (Double-A and Triple-A), Greene recorded a 3.30 ERA with 139 strikeouts across 106.1 innings of work. He started 21 games in all, surrendering 13 home runs, walking 39 batters, and earning a 10-8 record.

Currently, Greene ranks as the No. 1 prospect in the Cincinnati Reds' organization, and the No. 22 prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline. He joins fellow Reds prospects Nick Lodolo (47), Elly De La Cruz (76), and Matt McClain (87) in MLB's Top 100 prospect rankings.

Greene is slated to have a tough matchup for his first career start, taking on the reigning World Series champs in Atlanta for the final game of the Reds' regular-season debut series.
