Former American League Cy Young Award winner and current ace for the Cleveland Guardians Shane Bieber reached a contract on Tuesday with the team to avoid arbitration. Bieber and the Guardians settled on a $6 million dollar deal. However, he still has two years left of arbitration before hitting the open market in 2025.

Bieber has enjoyed a very successful career since making his big league debut four seasons ago. Following a mediocre 2018 rookie campaign as a 23-year old, Bieber made a name for himself after being named as an All-Star replacement for the 2019 game at Progressive Field in Cleveland. He entered the game in the fifth inning and went on to strike out a side of hitters that included: Wilson Contreras, Ketel Marte, and Ronald Acuna Jr. He was ultimately named All-Star game MVP for his performance.

But that was truly just the beginning for the right-hander.

Bieber dominated the competition in 2020. Cleveland’s ace pitched to the tune of an elite league-leading 1.63 ERA and 122 strikeouts over 12 games during the shortened season.

He started 2021 off well, and carried a 3.17 ERA and 134 strikeouts through the first portion of the season. But a mid-year injury forced him to miss the remainder of the campaign, excluding one late September appearance. However, that late-season appearance gave hope to Cleveland fans.

The Guardians chances of being competitive in 2022 ultimately lie on their impressive pitching rotation. Shane Bieber and the staff will look to lead the Cleveland Guardians to the playoffs as the ace enjoys his new contract.
