The Detroit Tigers entered Game 4 of the American League Divisional Series needing a win. The Seattle Mariners won Game 1 and 3 to come within one victory of the ALCS. However, a trio of home runs from Gleyber Torres, Javier Baez, and Riley Greene propelled Detroit to a 9-3 win. Greene's solo shot gave the Tigers a lead they did not give up en route to a dominant effort.
The outfielder was one of many All-Stars that represented Detroit in the Midsummer Classic. Greene emerged as the Tigers' premier offensive threat this season as the team put together a dominant campaign. However, his swing against Eduard Bazardo might have been the biggest of his season.
Greene told Major League Baseball that he did not know what was going on during the play.
“To be honest, I don't know,” Greene said about the details of the play. “I kinda blacked out. Didn't really hear any fans, didn't hear nothing. Was just running the bases and it was awesome. We love our fans and they always show up for us.”
Baez followed Greene's lead in the same inning, crushing a solo home run of his own. Torres added the finishing touch in the seventh, giving Detroit a five run lead before knocking in the ninth Tigers run of the game in the ninth.
Now, Detroit heads back to Seattle for a winner-take-all Game 5 against the Mariners. Greene spoke about the drama heading into the matchup and his team's mindset.
“We're gonna go there, Skubal's on the mound so we feel pretty good about ourselves and we're ready to go.”
Skubal put together another great effort, but Detroit lost his start earlier in the series. After a trio of home runs in a must-win Game 4, the Tigers have all the momentum as the series shifts back to Seattle.
