The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Los Angeles Angels by a score of 2-0 at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night. What was a quiet game on the scoreboard turned into a dramatic affair late in the contest. There was a scare involving Angels star Mike Trout and home-plate umpire Nate Tomlinson, who was shockingly struck in the face by Trout's broken bat.

With one out in the ninth inning of the Angels-Dodgers game, Trout hit a broken-bat single, with the shards of the bat flying between the bars of the umpire's facemask. The Angels star, stunned by what his shattered bat had done, reluctantly ran to first base.
The ump was forced to exit the game and was taken to the emergency room. On Wednesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today provided a critical update on the well-being of the umpire.
Home-plate umpire Nate Tomlinson was taken to the emergency room Tuesday night after being struck in the face by Mike Trout's broken bat, with a piece flying between bars of his mask, cutting his face just above his eye and nose. He managed to avoid serious injury, his crew says.

Fortunately, the umpire has avoided serious injury, sustaining cuts above his eye and nose. However, the experience with Trout's dangerous bat is an eye-opener to just how perilous the job of an umpire, particularly that of one behind home-plate, is.
Fortunately, a scary moment ended up being just that: a scare. Hopefully, there are no more dangerous bat incidents in the Angels-Dodgers series, which concludes on Wednesday night.
