The Los Angeles Dodgers are the favorites to win the World Series in 2022. They also just dropped the opening series of the season against the Colorado Rockies. Colorado defeated Julio Urias and the Dodgers in the rubber match of a three-game set on Sunday by a final score of 9-4. Urias struggled in the start, as the left-hander completed just two innings while surrendering 6 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits while recording no strikeouts.
Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts shared his thoughts on Urias's first outing of the season.
“He just didn't seem in sync from pitch No. 1. I just saw him not really commanding anything.”
Pitchers posting difficult stat lines early in a season typically is not a big deal. It is even less of a concern this year because MLB endured a shortened Spring Training due to the lockout. However, Julio Urias's average fastball velocity was down 2.5 MPH from last year. He sat at over 94 MPH in 2021, and averaged just over 91 MPH on Sunday.
The Dodgers' star left-hander addressed the decline in velocity through an interpreter following the game.
“I could throw 100 miles per hour and the results would have been the same, because the execution was poor.”
Roberts and Urias chalked up the outing due to lack of execution and command rather than declining velocity. But the speed of his pitches will be something to keep an eye on moving forward.
Dave Roberts shared an interesting quote on Urias prior to the game as well.
“He’s not sneaking up on anyone. He’s a top end starter for a championship caliber ball club and he’s got to follow that ‘21 in 2022.”
Urias is officially on opposing team's radars this season. He is a star and is going to be treated as such. He will look to rebound in his next outing for the Dodgers.
