The New York Mets will honor the 10th anniversary of their first and only no-hitter in franchise history this season. The plan is to celebrate the occasion during a pregame ceremony prior to their May 31st scheduled game. They will honor the battery mates that teamed up for the no-hitter in pitcher Johan Santana and catcher Josh Thole.
Santana fired the no-hitter for the Mets 10 years ago at Citi Field against the St. Louis Cardinals. He recently shared his memories on the historic day.
“The way (we celebrated) a middle of the season game. You celebrate like you won the whole thing. And to me, that's what's very special. The way we (celebrated) on the field. But also the way the fans did. I think that was the most memorable thing for me that night.”
He continued by discussing his excitement level for the Mets upcoming ceremony.
“I was very proud to be a part of the first no-hitter and I can’t wait to celebrate with the fans.”
Santana finished his career with extremely impressive accolades and numbers across the board. The talented left-handed starter won two Cy Young Awards in the American League with the Twins and made four All-Star appearances between his time in Minnesota and New York. He led the league in ERA on three separate occasions and finished his career with a very respectable 3.20 ERA.
Durability became an issue late in his career with the Mets and his last big league outing came in 2012.
Nonetheless, Johan Santana is remembered by MLB fans as a two-time Cy Young Award winner and the Mets remember him as their only pitcher in franchise history to throw a no-hitter.
