Starling Marte is beginning his time with New York Mets while dealing with an injury. For a team that has had awful luck with injuries in recent memory, it stings to have one of their marquee offseason additions hampered by injury.

Marte is dealing with an oblique issue that delayed his ability to practice hitting during Spring Training. Being ready in time for the regular season was not seen as a guarantee. Fortunately, with Opening Day less than two weeks away, his condition is improving. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Marte will play in the Mets' Sunday contest against the St. Louis Cardinals.

He will likely take the spot in right field, which is a questionable decision for a team in need of a true centerfielder. Whether this is subject to change when his body is 100 percent remains to be seen. The 33-year-old would best be used in center field but will be a great addition for New York no matter where he plays.

Marte spent time with the Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics last season, recording 145 hits, 47 stolen bases, 27 doubles and 12 home runs in 120 games. He posted a slash line of .303/.383/.458 and a career-high OPS+ of 132. The Mets need help in the outfield badly and Marte will provide just that.

New York had high ambitions last season but floundered because of a combination of injuries and poor performances. After another big offseason, the Mets are looking like the NL East favorites.
