In a move that surprised some, the New York Yankees announced Tuesday that they will bring back manager Aaron Boone on a three-year deal.
Per ESPN, Boone reacted to being back with the Yankees for the next few seasons.
“I think I can help lead us to the top. That's why I'm here. That's why I came back,” Boone said. “Ultimately, though, the proof will be in the pudding.”
It was another disappointing end to the season for the Yankees as they were able to scratch out an AL Wild Card spot, but were promptly eliminated by the Boston Red Sox in the one game, winner-take-all contest.
Article Continues BelowThe Yankees have shown the same aggressiveness with Boone as manager to bring in tons of star talent and make moves at the trade deadline. However, it hasn't resulted in postseason success, which is the ultimate deciding factor in New York.
Many had assumed with Boone's expiring contract and not advancing past the Wild Card game that the Yankees would move on and look elsewhere for a new manager. Instead Boone is back and has the support of the front office.
“A manager is only as good as the players he's got,” Brian Cashman said Tuesday. “If he was entering the free-agent market, I believe he'd be the No. 1 managerial candidate in baseball. There's a number of different vacancies, and we would be going to market looking for someone like him.”
Expectations will remain sky high and Boone will likely need to lead the Yankees to a pennant or a World Series title to fulfill those expectations that the Yankees have in place.
