The New York Yankees have been the best team in baseball for majority of the 2022 MLB season. But they got their crown rocked in their two-game series against the Houston Astros.
The two top teams in the American League played each other in a double-header, with the Astros coming out on top in both affairs, first 3-2 then 7-5. Those results locked in Houston's season series edge against the Yankees as they've now won five of their seven games.
But Yankees skipper Aaron Boone is adamant that the sky isn't falling in the Bronx.

If we happen to come back here in October we're going to show up. We're going to expect to win. We think we're really good. They're really good. Don't overstate this.”
Considering the Yankees were on pace for a historic win rate just before this recent slide, recency bias certainly amplifies concerns about the lost season series. The two top teams seem to be on a collision course to meet in the ALCS, and if expectations become reality, all games played prior are nothing but records on paper.
Both teams virtually have their division titles on lock as they own double-digit leads against the next closest rival. But The Astros have chopped the deficit between the two sides down to two and a half games. The two losses certainly matter in terms of chasing down the Yankees in the standings. But as a predictor for how a potential playoff series will go? It hardly moves a needle given how equally talented both sides are.
