The Toronto Blue Jays are currently in last place in the American League East. It's been a slow start to the season so far but there's still plenty of time to right the ship. With the team trying to figure out how to do that, it appears the club has made a surprising roster change involving a former top prospect.
Reports indicate the Blue Jays are designating Cavan Biggio for assignment, per a team announcement. In a corresponding move, Toronto is calling up Spencer Horwitz from Triple-A. Horwitz is considered active for Friday night's game against the Oakland Athletics.

It's a bit of an odd move considering Biggio isn't playing the worst ball right now. This season he's recording a .200 batting average, two home runs, and nine RBIs. Nonetheless, the former top prospect of the Blue Jays could potentially sign with a new team now. So, at the very least, this could be a silver lining for his career in the MLB.
We'll see if this decision was a good one or not. Considering Toronto has quite the mountain to climb to get back in playoff contention, they could just be looking to develop other prospects on the roster. Spencer Horwitz is just 26 years old and made his MLB debut in the 2023 season.
Can the Blue Jays get back to playoff contention?

Injuries have plagued the Blue Jays all season long. So, it's tough to win when your best players aren't on the field. But anything can happen in baseball. Teams tend to go hot or cold throughout the season and if Toronto can get hot at the right time they could move on up the standings in the AL East.
But that's much easier said than done. They play in a division with the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles. Both of them look like legitimate playoff contenders at this point in the regular season.
With that said the Blue Jays might be a team to watch ahead of the trade deadline. Depending on where they're at in the standings could determine if they're buyers or sellers by July 30. Of course, they could opt to make no moves and maintain the roster they have. But only time will tell what this team will do.
As of now, it's hard to imagine the Blue Jays getting back to playoff contention this year. Between injuries and poor play, they could remain at the bottom of the AL East for the remainder of the season. The good news is the roster has plenty of talent when healthy. Either way, it'll be interesting to see what Toronto decides to do.
