The Washington Nationals had an interesting season that saw the organization get rid of two cornerstones of their team. At the trade deadline the Nationals decided to become sellers as they traded Max Scherzer, Trea Turner, Yan Gomes, and Josh Harrison. This came as a surprise to most fans around the league. People expected that the Nationals were going to struggle throughout the season but not many expected that Trea Turner and Max Scherzer wouldn't be on the team anymore.
Washington just won a World Championship as recently as 2019. This is one of the quickest fallouts that a championship team has had in a long time.
The Nationals have some improvements that they need to make all through the roster. They aren't going to be much better next season but when you have arguably the best hitter in baseball in Juan Soto, they aren't going to want to waste any of his prime years. If they build around Soto the Nationals can easily contend for another World Series. They have their Superstar and if they want Soto to be a part of their team for the next 15-plus years, they better start making him happy. The Nationals are going to make some moves this offseason so let's take a look at some players that they can go after.
Three Players The Nationals Should Go After This Offseason
Michael Conforto
The Nationals might be able to buy low on Michael Conforto as he shouldn't be expecting too much money after the season he had last year. Conforto finished with a 0.8 WAR season. He slashed .232/.344/.384. He was only able to hit 14 home runs in 479 plate appearances. This was the worst season of his career as he's typically been a 270-plus average hitter. He also has had three seasons with over 25 home runs.
Michael Conforto is having a monster season. What a clutch home run, for so many reasons.

The Nationals will hope that they can buy low on him and they can sign him to a cheap deal for a few years. If they were able to buy low on him they will also be able to add some other pieces around him and Juan Soto. They could be right back to what they were a few seasons ago if they make the right moves.
Alex Wood
Alex Wood would be a nice veteran to add to a young team. He's been pitching in the Major Leagues since 2013 and has always been someone who is serviceable on the mound.
Article Continues BelowIn his career, he has a 3.5 ERA and a 63-48 record on the mound. He's coming off arguably the best season of his career where he went 10-4 for the San Francisco Giants with a 3.83 ERA. He's only 30 years old but he does have a lot of usage in his arm. Washington should look to sign him for a favorable deal. He has spent a good portion of his career with the Atlanta Braves so he knows the National League East pretty well.
He's also somebody who has come out of the bullpen for parts of his career. This could come back to help the Nationals as they desperately need some rotation and Bullpen help.
The Nationals should look to add some cheap guys who can come in and make an immediate impact for them. Alex Wood would be the perfect guy as he's filled with experience in the MLB.
Andrelton Simmon
Simmons is heading towards the back end of his career as he's already 32 years old. He's had an impressive career and has been able to accumulate 37.3 WAR in 10 seasons. He features arguably the best glove at the shortstop position that the game has seen in the past decade. He's an elite defender who can come in and take control of an infield. With all the young guys that the Nationals have, it might be a good idea to bring in a veteran like this to teach the ropes to players like Carter Kieboom and others.
He's not been known for his power in his bat but he has slashed .265/.313/.369. He's only been able to hit 70 career home runs but he does have over 300 on-base percentage. Add in that he is a Platinum Glove-caliber defender, and he's serviceable.
The Nationals are bound to have another interesting season next year. They need to start thinking about the future of Juan Soto. If they want to re-sign him they need to start building around him. From the look of things, Soto is going to be one of the best offensive players that the game has ever seen. If they don't turn into contenders soon, he might get frustrated and sign somewhere else when his time comes.
