Sporting Kansas City midfielder Felipe Hernandez has been suspended without pay for the remainder of the season by Major League Soccer, the league announced on Friday.

MLS found that Hernandez placed bets on two league matches, which is in direct violation of its “gambling integrity rules.”

Hernandez came forward to Sporting Kansas City club officials on July 5 over concerns of his own personal safety as a result of his gambling debts.

MLS subsequently launched an investigation into the matter, which included an extensive review of the claims made by the 23-year-old midfielder.

The league's investigation revealed Hernandez placed online bets on two MLS matches that did not involve Sporting Kansas City. More so, it found that no other players were involved in the betting of league matches and Hernandez's bets did not impact the “integrity” of any fixture.

MLS further added that Hernandez will be eligible for reinstatement on Jan. 1, 2022, via an application to Commissioner Don Garber, who would then evaluate “certain directives” before making a final decision on his return to the league.

The third-year MLS midfielder took to Twitter following the suspension announcement to reveal that he had been away for the past months to receive counseling for his gambling addiction. He also noted his aspiration to soon be back on the field.

Hernandez had not featured in an MLS match since July 5, when he earned a start for Sporting Kansas City in the 2-0 league win over the Los Angeles Galaxy. The club had since ruled him out of fixtures due to “personal reasons.”

Hernandez has totaled for 21 league appearances over three seasons with the club.

Sporting Kansas City currently holds second place in the Western Conference standings. The side sits at two points behind the first place Seattle Sounders with six games remaining in the ongoing season.
