The NBA was hit with a shockwave of news on Thursday morning when a report from ESPN came out about Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver. The report, which was written by ESPN's Baxter Holmes, detailed stunning allegations against the Suns owner, including racist and sexist remarks, creating a generally toxic work environment.

Reports immediately following the report's release said the NBA would open an investigation into Sarver and the Suns. On Thursday afternoon, the NBA released their statement.

“The allegations contained in today’s ESPN article are extremely serious, and we have directed the Wachtell Lipton law firm to commence a comprehensive investigation,” NBA Executive Vice President, Communications Mike Bass said on behalf of the NBA and WNBA. “The NBA and WNBA remain committed to providing a respectful and inclusive workplace for all employees. Once the investigation is completed, its findings will provide the basis for any league action.”

Some of the most disturbing details from the ESPN report include repeated use of the n-word inside the Suns' coaches office after hearing Warriors star Draymond Green use the word on the court as well as the alleged idea to use strippers to lure free agents to Phoenix.

In a statement following the report, Suns owner Robert Sarver denied the claims and asked for an impartial NBA investigation in order to clear his name.

“I continue to be shocked by the false reporting from Baxter Holmes,” Sarver said. “While there is so much that is inaccurate and misleading in this story that I hardly know where to begin, let me be clear: The n-word is not part of my vocabulary. I have never called anyone or any group of people the n-word, or referred to anyone or any group of people by that word, either verbally or m writing. I don't use that word. It is abhorrent and ugly and denigrating and against everything I believe in. The way I lead my personal and professional life makes that clear.

“Instead of reporting the truth, Holmes' story based on misrepresentations from former Suns coach Earl Watson and other unnamed “sources.” Mr. Watson created an unprofessional and toxic atmosphere in our organization. He is clearly not a credible source. Despite hearing from witness after winless that disputed Mr. Watson's stones, Mr. Holmes completely disregarded the truth here. Now we are in the position of trying to disprove things that did not-happen. At this point, I would entirely welcome an impartial NBA investigation which may prove our only outlet for clearing my name and the reputation of an organization of which I'm so very proud.”

The Phoenix Suns will continue their 2021-22 NBA season with a Thursday night matchup against the Houston Rockets. Given the details in the story, it'll be tough for everyone to keep their minds focused on the game. The players, led by Chris Paul and Devin Booker, will look to improve their 3-3 record.
