The Dallas Mavericks may have to tone down their bench celebrations a bit when the 2022-23 season rolls in, especially with the NBA Competition Committee planning some big changes on bench decorum punishment.

According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, the committee is working on some rule changes for the upcoming season, highlighted by a proposal to penalize the “take foul.” While that is the focus, however, the committee is also seeking to prevent teams from doing excessive celebrations during games that basically affects the quality of product and experience the league gives to its fans and viewers.

Another modification the committee will submit to the BOG for approval will be enforcing proper bench decorum by issuing stiffer penalties, sources said. One of a few principal matters on decorum are players standing up at the bench for extended portions of the game, obstructing the view of fans sitting behind the bench, sources said.

Now why would this be a problem for the Mavs? Well, because Dallas has repeatedly ignored the bench decorum the NBA imposes and has kept celebrating like crazy–often standing far away from the bench without consideration for the fans watching from behind them.

To recall, the team has been fined $175,000 throughout the 2022 playoffs because of repeated violations of the bench decorum. While the Mavs have insisted that the league shouldn't punish players celebrating the success of others, the NBA certainly doesn't see it that way.

If Dallas wants to avoid paying a lot of money once again, the players should practice restriction this offseason.
