Bet it all on black? Sports gamblers might be saying that to themselves following the Brooklyn Nets’ stunning dual moves to get commitments from Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving and signing the two All-Stars.

In conjunction, however, the New York Knicks’—long rumored to be in pursuit of one or both of Durant and Irving—chances to win the 2020 championship plummeted.

The Nets’ odds jumped up specularly on Sunday night following the revelation that both Durant and Irving would be donning the black drab on the Brooklyn team.

Before the Durant news came out, Brooklyn was at a 25-1 odds to win next year’s championship. After the news, however, the Nets are a more palatable 18-1.

Meanwhile, Knicks will have to settle at 100-1 odds following the devastating news for fans. Prior to Durant’s decision going public, the New York franchise’s odds were at 30-1.

The Knicks haven’t made the playoffs since the 2012-13 season under then-star forward Carmelo Anthony.

While the Nets will have to deal with a rehabilitating Kevin Durant—he ruptured his Achilles in the 2019 Finals’ Game 5 and won’t likely see the hardwood for 12 months—the addition of Irving will undoubtedly help their chances. While with the Celtics (a healthy) Kyrie could only muster a second-round exit, the Nets, who are also rumored to sign one-time All-Star center DeAndre Jordan, have vibrant pieces to surround Irving and eventually Durant. Caris LeVert, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Jarrett Allen are solid, young additions who can bolster Irving and Durant’s respective talents.

Might it be time to call your bookie? Just don’t blame us if Kyrie alone can’t take his team far in the postseason again.
