As an extraordinary sign of empathy, NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal recently donated a home to an Atlanta mother whose 12-year-old son, Isaiah Payton, was shot at a football game and paralyzed from the chest down.

In an interview with WXIA-TV, O'Neal revealed that the family had been living in a one-bedroom apartment that did not have accessibility for people who are disabled or injured. Now, though, the Payton's will have a nice home.

“It's just sad,” O'Neal said, via ESPN. “It could have been any one of us. It could have been my son. It could've been your cousin. She was living in a one-bedroom apartment with her two boys, so we found her a house in a nice area.”

According to ESPN, O'Neal had a few partners in this effort, including two board members from the Papa John's and and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. Shaq has said that he will help to furnish the new home and pay for its first year of rent.

Payton took a bullet through his spine in August after a high school football game. Another teenager, 16-year-old Damean Spear, was also wounded and treated for minor injuries. A 15-year-old was arrested on Wednesday in connection to the shooting and is being charged with aggravated assault.
