In recent days, trade rumors have heated up surrounding Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell. Two of the NBA’s top young players have been connected to Mitchell in these trade talks.
New York Knicks forward RJ Barrett and Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro have both been linked to potential deals.
With both Herro and Barrett being just 22 years old, they could both serve as potential building blocks for the Jazz. They could also be the foundational pieces in a trade involving Donovan Mitchell.
Tyler Herro has been a rising star for the Heat. Not only was Herro a legitimate scoring option, but he also took home the league's sixth man award. In 66 games last season, he averaged 20.7 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 4.0 APG. After his explosive season, Herro has also made a case to become a starter.
RJ Barrett, much like Herro, underwent a breakout year last season. He averaged 20.0 PPG, 5.8 RPG, and 3.0 APG. He set career-highs across the board.
As both players have become better all-around players, they could be in line to get paid soon. As they enter their fourth seasons, a new contract could soon be offered to them both.
Bleacher Reports Jake Fischer claims that both Tyler Herro and RJ Barrett are on the search for max extensions. In his Please Don't Aggregate This podcast, Fischer says “The word on the street is definitely that both Barrett and Tyler Herro are looking for maximum contract extensions.”
If both players are looking for max deals, that could potentially impact a Donovan Mitchell trade.
The Jazz interest in both these players could be centered around their lack of a future contract. With both Tyler Herro and RJ Barrett going into contract years, the Jazz could work out their deals with either player.
If either the Heat or Knicks were to re-sign their guy to a max deal, the Jazz would have to figure out a way to make the trade work.
Up to this point, it seems like the Jazz are more interested in stockpiling assets. They have already accumulated draft capital through their recent Rudy Gobert trade. Trading for a player with a max contract may not be something that they are interested in. There are rumor's that they could be looking for four or more picks for Donovan Mitchell.
