Why The Mavericks Could Cover The Spread

The Dallas Mavericks have had an okay year so far. Injuries and COVID have definitely handicapped this team, but they have managed to persevere. Through the first half of the season, the Mavs have a winning record with 22 wins and 19 losses. Dallas has won six of their last seven games, but are coming off a disappointing 23-point loss to the New York Knicks. The Mavs did not look like themselves in that game in what seems to have been a fluke. If Dallas wants to take down the red hot Grizzlies they will need to have a bounce-back performance.

Dallas struggled across the board in their loss to the Knicks. Overall, the Mavericks just had an all-around poor shooting night. They only made 32 of their 78 shot attempts, and they went eight for 37 from beyond the arc. These numbers are atrocious and show just how much this team relies on Luka. Luka creates all the offense for the Mavs and when he is having a tough night it is likely that the team will too. Doncic has only played a handful of games since his return, but this was probably his worst. He went eight for 23 from the field and an abysmal one for nine from beyond the arc. When it comes to the Mavs it all starts with Luka.

While both COVID and injuries have proven detrimental to many teams, the Mavs are largely unaffected. Dallas currently only has two players listed on their injury report. Both Kristaps Porzingis and Willie Cauley-Stein are listed as out for Friday's contest. These are two of Dallas' best big men, however, the Mavs have shown that they can have success without them. Expect Dallas to battle on Friday and try to make up for their loss against New York.

Why The Grizzlies Could Cover The Spread

The Memphis Grizzlies have had a great start to the year. Through the first half of the regular season, they have managed to win 30 games and lose only 14. Memphis is the hottest team in basketball right now, having won their last eleven games. The Grizzlies' most recent win came against the Minnesota Timberwolves by eight. Friday's match won't be an easy victory for Memphis, but they are certainly capable of getting the win. The Grizzlies will look to extend their win streak to twelve on Friday as they battle against the Mavericks. If Memphis can keep up their high level of play, then there is little that can stand in their way.

There are two reasons that the Grizzlies beat the Timberwolves: free throws and rebounds. First off, the Grizzlies got the line an astonishing 35 times. Memphis plays a physical style of basketball that often results in trips to the line, and their last game was no exception. In comparison, the Wolves only shot 14 free throws. This astonishing difference more than accounts for the extra points the Grizzlies scored to win. Another big reason they won was because of their rebounding. The Grizzlies grabbed 56 rebounds compared to 46 from Minnesota. These second-chance shot opportunities and extra possessions are huge advantages. Memphis played an all-around great game.

Injuries and COVID are currently impacting every team in the league and the Grizzlies are no exception. Memphis has four players listed on their injury report. All four of those players are listed as out and will not likely play in this match on Friday. Headlining the unavailable players is Steven Adams. While these absences are tough, they are nothing new for this Grizzlies team who still has its core roster available. Memphis has everyone they need to get this win and will likely battle hard on Friday.

Final Mavericks-Grizzlies Prediction & Pick

This is a pretty easy decision. Dallas was just torn apart by the Knicks, and even though they might bounce back the Grizzlies are a tough team. Betting against Memphis in their last eleven games has been a losing move and that still seems to be the case. The Grizzlies are hot right now and there is no reason they won't be able to extend their win streak to twelve on Friday. Pick Memphis to win and cover.
