Why the Spurs Could Cover the Spread

The San Antonio Spurs have yet to hit their stride this season as they have lost ten of their first fourteen games. They will be looking to avoid a fourth straight loss after losing to the Clippers in a 106-92 road loss on Tuesday. The Spurs shot a terrible 5-22 from the 3-point line and trailed by as many as 18 points in the 3rd quarter. Offensively, the Spurs rank 12th in points per game (108.4) and 2nd in points in the paint per game (53.0) & assists per game (28.3). The offense is capable of playing well; they just have a lot of young talent, so it will take some time to gel together.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Spurs allow 109.3 points per game and rank 28th in opponent points per game in the paint (48.9). The Timberwolves have a dominant big man in Karl Anthony-Towns averaging 23.1 points and 9.4 rebounds, so it will be crucial to keep him out of the lane in this matchup. Luckily, the Timberwolves are 1-6 against the spread in their last seven home games.

Why the Timberwolves Could Cover the Spread

The Minnesota Timberwolves are 2-8 over their last ten games averaging 102.7 points per game. They have a lot of promising talent in Anthony Edwards, D'Angelo Russell, and KAT, yet they seem like they are one more star player away from being a contender. Anthony Edwards and KAT lead the team in scoring with 23.1 points apiece. Minnesota leads the league in three-point attempts (42.6) and ranks 4th in three-pointers made per game (13.9). If they can out shoot San Antonio beyond the arc tonight, then they should be able to win this game comfortably.

Defensively, the Timberwolves are a very long, athletic team that can force steals and run in transition. They rank 6th in steals per game (9.3) and 11th in fastbreak points (12.9). They also rank 7th in blocks per game (5.9). Minnesota gives up 107.4 points per game to opponents. In the last five meetings against the Spurs, Minnesota is 5-0 against the spread.

Final Spurs-Timberwolves Prediction & Pick

Both teams have had a rough start to their seasons. Minnesota won last night 107-97 at home against the Sacramento Kings. As a unit, they shot 50% from the field and forced 20 turnovers. They looked great in last night's victory and can easily win this one if Edwards and Towns get hot again. The Spurs are 1-5 against the spread in the previous six meetings in Minnesota. Jakob Poeltl being out for the Spurs is concerning as they have no answer for Towns in the paint. I will lay the bucket and take Minnesota tonight to cover the spread.

Final Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves -1.5 (-110)
