The Timberwolves are legitimate playoff contenders for the first time in years. Strong seasons from Karl Anthony-Towns and Anthony Edwards have led the Wolves to a 28-25 record, which is good enough for the seventh seed in the Western Conference.

Things haven't gone quite as well for the Kings. Sacramento is one of the worst teams in the league with a 20-35 record, but a recent blockbuster trade with the Indiana Pacers could help improve things. This should be an entertaining game regardless of the records at play, so it's time to get into the pick.

Why The Timberwolves Could Cover The Spread

Minnesota runs one of the highest-paced offenses in the NBA, and that strategy should be an advantage in this matchup. The Timberwolves average nearly 16 fast-break points per game while shooting the fourth-most shots per game in the league. Sacramento has struggled to stop the fast break all year long, allowing 13 fast-break points per contest. The Kings also allow their opponents to shoot upwards of 90 shots per game, one of the worst numbers in the league. Minnesota should be able to play its style of offense to perfection throughout this game.

Sacramento will be far from full strength in this game. The recent trade for Pacers star center Domantas Sabonis will leave them shorthanded, as Sabonis, Jeremy Lamb, and Justin Holiday will all be unavailable because of the recent nature of the trade. It's possible that the Kings will miss star point guard De'Aaron Fox and power forward Marvin Bagley III in this game too. Sacramento will have to rely on backups for a significant portion of this contest, and that's never a good thing.

Why The Kings Could Cover The Spread

Luckily for the Kings, the Wolves will also be missing some key players in this one. Guards Patrick Beverley and D'Angelo Russell are both questionable, and key backups Naz Reid and Taurean Prince both have day-to-day designations. It seems likely that a couple of those guys miss time, so it's fair to expect Beverley and Russell to sit this one out. That means Jaylen Nowell and Malik Beasley will be forced to take on a heavy workload in this one, which can only be a good thing for the Kings.

While the Wolves do possess a great offense, their defense leaves something to be desired. Minnesota gives up a whopping 111 points per game while allowing opponents to shoot high percentages from anywhere on the court. The Kings aren't the best offensive team, but they're certainly capable of exploiting this below-average Timberwolves defense.

Final Timberwolves-Kings Prediction & Pick

There is absolutely no reason to have confidence in the Kings here. Half of their roster could miss this game, and they aren't particularly good when everyone plays. Take the Timberwolves here with plenty of confidence.
