The Brooklyn Nets don’t really need another scoring machine, since they still have Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving. They are the last team anyone should think about when considering NBA rosters in need of a scoring boost. Yet, the Nets certainly have the right to have too many of a good thing, which in this case is a talented scorer. They appeared to have landed one of the most promising young bucket-getters in the form of rookie Cameron Thomas.
Thomas is not wasting time in showing the Nets why they made a fantastic decision to take him 27th in the 2021 NBA draft earlier this August.
In Sunday’s 104-100 win in the NBA summer league over the San Antonio Spurs, Thomas blew up for 36 points on 11-of-25 shooting from the field. He also had two rebounds and two steals, but his scoring definitely stood out among everything he did on the floor in that game. Prior to that, Thomas put up 31 points on 10-of-23 shooting in Brooklyn’s 84-81 double-overtime victory against the Washington Wizards.

Thomas can continue to polish his offensive efficiency. He has not been gun-shy, but if he wants to thrive in the NBA, he’ll have to be more efficient with his shot, especially since he’s not going to get as many touches when he’s playing alongside Kevin Durant and the others on the Nets’ big-league roster. One thing about him is that he can generate a lot of points from the free-throw line, which he has always shown since his days at LSU.
Thomas played one year for the Tigers in college and averaged 23.0 points on 40.6 FG% with the team.
