The significant increase in player movement that has impacted the league in the past few years has been met by mixed reactions from people both within and outside the NBA. Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson appears to have seen the positive side of how players currently possess so much power in terms of their control over their own futures — and that of their respective teams.
Nonetheless, the veteran coach admits the shift in power seems to have set aside how important the role of the coach is on every team:
Article Continues Below“It feels unfair, in a way,” Atkinson admits, via ESPN senior writer Jackie MacMullan. “Can you do a better job than Steve Kerr has? And what about Nick Nurse? He had this storybook year, winning in his first year as head coach. You wonder why the players wouldn't say, ‘Can't we keep this going?'
Atkinson does have an excellent point here, but at the end of the day, even he is able to realize the fact that it is still the players who have the more significant part to play:
“But I do like the players having the right to choose,” he added. “We live in this free-market society yet we have a socialistic athletic structure.”
Kenny Atkinson can't complain too much following a highly successful offseason for the Nets. By acquiring the services of both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, Brooklyn now has a legitimate shot of winning an NBA title in the next few years.
