The Boston Celtics were considered title favorites heading into the 2019-19 NBA season, but they failed to get into their rhythm because of an alleged tension within the team. Kyrie Irving is bearing the brunt of Boston's disappointing season. Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie believes that it is not proper to blame one person for a team's disappointing campaign. He admitted that he is not fully aware of what transpired within the Celtics franchise last season, but he is quite sure that Irving should not take all the blame.

After the season, Irving opted out of the final year of his contract with Boston, and it was expected that he will not return to the Celtics. In turn, the one-time NBA champion guard eventually signed a four-year, $141 million contract with the Nets. It was earlier reported that Dinwiddie led the recruiting pitch to convince Irving to move to Brooklyn.
The Celtics, on the other hand, found another All-Star guard to replace Irving. Boston inked a four-year, $141 million contract with Kemba Walker. The acquisition of Walker was finalized through a sign-and-trade agreement that sent Terry Rozier to the Charlotte Hornets.
