New York Knicks power forward Kristaps Porzingis will become a restricted free agent after the 2018-19 season ends if the Knicks offer him a $7.5 million qualifying offer. As a restricted free agent, Porzingis can sign an offer sheet with another team if he wants to, and then the Knicks would have 48 hours to match the offer or let Porzingis walk.

Kristaps Porzingis hasn't played this season, as he's recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in February of 2018. Many believe Porzingis will re-sign with the Knicks, but they might have to look out for the other team in New York.

According to Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News, Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks is high on Porzingis and could offer the Latvian big man a rather large offer sheet.

There are two other options worth exploring: 1) Porzingis signs a short-term deal — three years with a player option — so that he can hit unrestricted free agency sooner, and 2) he signs an offer sheet from another team, thus forcing the Knicks to match.

Regarding No. 2, watch out for the Brooklyn Nets. Sean Marks, the team’s GM, is high on Porzingis, according to a source, and has a history of offering big money to restricted free agents.

The Nets will have money in the offseason to sign two max-contract players.

Before he tore his ACL last season, Porzingis was averaging 22.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 48 games while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from beyond the arc.
