The Brooklyn Nets finally found their head coach and took a big risk in doing so. Steve Nash has a personal relationship with both Kevin Durant from their time in Golden State and with Kyrie Irving working out together in the offseason.

Nash has never been a head coach before, but all of a sudden he’s the head man of a team with very high expectations. The contrast between potential outcomes for Nash are so vast; he could flame out, but he also might have a fast track to winning Coach of the Year.

On the Locked On Nets podcast, host Marcus Barahal explains how Steve Nash could win Coach of the Year in his very first season.

Marcus Barahal: We wanted something fresh, some sort of positive spark that could come, because this team really does have a chance to win a title. And I think you can't really play it safe when you're at this level. You need to take a big swing, because you're on the fence already. You’ve got to just see if you can get over the hump and do what it takes to win a title.

So could Steve Nash be that guy? I think he definitely could. Could he also flame out and really prove that he is not capable of being an NBA head coach? Sure, but I think it's worth the risk, given the upside and given the fact that we don't know how good he could be.

He could be the best coach in the NBA next year. He could win Coach of the Year, we really don't know. And I think that is honestly on the table for Nash, winning Coach of the Year given the fact that this Nets team should improve a ton record wise, at least if they're able to stay healthy.

I mean, they were below .500 this season. You figure if they get KD and Kyrie back, they both play whatever it is, 65-70 games. Of course, this is assuming that we have the normal amount of games, you know, with COVID-19 you never know what could happen. But if all that plays out, I mean, this next team could certainly win 55-60 games given the amount of talent they have up top, and that kind of improvement, it's pretty rare. Especially for a first time head coach, I would think that he would be rewarded by the voters.

Whatever happens for the Nets this season, they’re bound to be an interesting story and a fun watch when they take the court.
