Gordon Hayward's tenure with the Charlotte Hornets isn't off to a good start.

The Hornets announced Wednesday that Hayward suffered an avulsion fracture of his fifth finger on his right hand during the team's preseason game against the Toronto Raptors on Monday. He will miss Thursday's preseason game against the Orlando Magic and be day-to-day moving forward.

Hayward had 14 points, six assists and four rebounds in 24 minutes against the Raptors in Monday's game. He notched 11 points, four rebounds and two assists in his preseason debut with his new club, which also came against Toronto.

Charlotte acquired Hayward from the Boston Celtics in a sign-and-trade deal in the offseason. The 30-year-old signed a four-year, $120 million deal despite injuries being a major problem for Hayward in recent years. He got this deal after declining a $34.2 million player option with Boston.

Gordon Hayward infamously suffered a devastating leg injury in his very first regular-season game with the Celtics back in 2017 after signing a max contract. He missed the entire rest of the season and then spent the next campaign trying to find his rhythm again.

While Hayward finally seemed to find his form this past season with the Celtics, injuries again took a toll. He played 52 out of 72 games in the regular season and then missed most of the playoffs due to an ankle injury. When he returned in the Eastern Conference Finals, he was clearly a shell of himself. Boston ultimately lost to the Miami Heat in six games.

The Hornets took a big swing on Hayward as they try to move up the East standings. Charlotte also added LaMelo Ball with the No. 3 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

While this injury shouldn't keep Gordon Hayward out too long, it's still an unfortunate setback as he gets acclimated to his new team.
