The Chicago Bulls find themselves in a whirlwind as the team seeks to establish the right direction for the franchise. Moreover, they might need to make changes rather quickly with rising star Lauri Markkanen growing impatient.
According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun Times, the third-year big man is reportedly not happy in Chicago. If the Bulls don't change the direction of the organization, it's likely that the former no. 7 overall pick seeks a move from the Windy City.
Make no mistake about it, third-year big man Lauri Markkanen was one unhappy camper before the coronavirus put the NBA on hiatus. Unhappy enough that if the direction of the organization was going to stay unchanged, he’d rather be elsewhere.
Markkanen had promising rookie and sophomore campaigns with the Bulls. In his rookie season, he averaged 15.2 points and 7.5 rebounds. He turned up those numbers to 18.7 markers and 9.0 boards in his sophomore year. However, in his third season, those stats dropped to 14.7 and 6.3, respectively.
As a promising prospect, Markkanen obviously wants to be on a competing squad rather than play for a losing team for the third year in a row. The Bulls had high expectations to make a postseason in run in 2019-20. Nonetheless, they have not progressed at all this season and are likely headed towards another high lottery pick in the upcoming draft.
The Bulls have made it known that they are on the search for a new general manager. They reportedly want to make the new hire before the NBA hiatus comes to an end.
Chicago will have plenty of time to make a decision with the NBA still undecided on when the season will resume or whether it will continue at all. Whatever the case, this will surely be an important decision for the Bulls.
